Mumtaj

Mike Spits bought the 16.50-metre Feadship Mumtaj (ex. Kalmia) after discovering her for sale in Malta in 2016. With no previous experience in motoryachts, he sought a classic Feadship as a stylish pied à l’eau for his visits to Amsterdam. Encouraged by a friend, Mike was drawn to Mumtaj’s timeless design and authentic restoration. Despite warnings, he decided to sail her back to the Netherlands with his 80-year-old father and Derk van Dieren, a seasoned coastguard volunteer.

The journey proved challenging but rewarding. From engine overheating off the coast of Sicily to a rescue by the local coastguard, Mike’s account mixes naivety with determination and humour. After fitting new diesel filters, the voyage continued via France and included memorable stops such as St Tropez and Siracusa. Despite her age and need for some attention, Mumtaj consistently impressed with her smooth ride and heritage feel.

Mike remains committed to maintaining Mumtaj in her original condition, celebrating her craftsmanship and character. His story reflects the joy of owning a piece of maritime history, even if the learning curve is steep.
