D’ouwe Freddy

From the early 1930s, Akerboom & Van Lent collaborated with Fred J. Kemper of Schiedam on the Kaagkruisers series. Launched as Navette, she was built in 1939 and was one of the first yachts to carry the distinctive bow emblem with Neptune’s trident.

The name D’ouwe Freddy has some connection to coffee (Douwe Egberts) and beer (Heineken), although the exact link is unclear. He bought the boat 21 or 22 years ago from someone in Leeuwarden who had sailed her for 34 years. The man was very emotional about parting with her. Despite the Van Leest family’s long legs, they often went on holiday with the whole family and their two children. In the meantime, the parents have bought a larger yacht, and the daughter now often sails her.
